National off road work group discussing 4x4 ban and options to minimise impactsThe National Off Road Work Group (NOW) has been formed to regulate the off road travel industry  in South Africa.

This was a knee jerk reaction to the 4x4 ban or the closure of all beaches in South Africa to motor vehicle traffic and its subsequent impact on the tourism industry of South Africa.

Many off road users were shocked at the total ban of motor vehicles within the coastal zones of South Africa, and after the minister of DEAT (Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism) refused to budge on the 4x4 ban issue, many became weary that the so called 4x4 ban or  total ban of motor vehicles will be extended to other areas of South Africa.

Their fears were not unfounded and much has been written about this in many forums. The Minister himself (Martinus Van Schalkwyk) has taken a very hard stand and is also active in closing 4x4 trails and quad bike routes, claiming environmental damage as a reason......

Please visit www.now.org.za to find out the truth and what this great organization is doing to help fix the problems associated with environmental damage allegedly caused by off road vehicles.

The Elephant Coast of KZN South Africa took a very serious economic knock when the many beach users just simply vanished after the 4x4 ban was implemented and enforced within the Greater St. Lucia wetlands park. The recovery has been long and hard, with many not making it and leaving  the area to ply their trade else where when the tourism numbers became unsustainable for their business.

Losses were recorded by many major organizations such as KZN wildlife, GSLWPA (greater St. Lucia wetlands Park Authority) KZN Tourism and others.

The minister of DEAT (Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism) refused to budge and there was a few court cases against the minister. This battle is still ongoing  (November 2009), and the National Off Road Work Group (now.org.za) is working on a variety of issues which could alleviate the losses if implemented according to their strict code of conduct.

Info4u staff wish the management team at NOW well and will support them where ever possible as they are doing a great job.
