There is a Large sugar mill at Riverview along the banks of the Umfolozi
river which processes sugar cane and produces both brown and white sugar mostly
for the domestic market under the brand names of ILOVO, HULETS and a few other
local names. The sugar industry has its own private mini rail network in place
to assist the farmers with transporting the cane to the mill. Besides the rail
network there are also many fleets of 18 wheelers which move sugar cane to the
mill for the farmers. There are not many large scale sugar cane farmers, and
the sugar mill itself does not own any farms. The rail network is run by UCOSP
(Umfolozi Co-Operative Sugar Planters) A lot of the sugar is grown in
the Umfolozi flats and Monzi areas. More and more of the sugar cane is now being
grown inland at further distances from the mill due to urban sprawl. This has
had a positive spin off in that roads are now being made and rural people are
now able to get their goods to town and the market a lot easier. |
