The eastern shores of Lake St. Lucia is just 25 minutes drive
from mtubatuba and less than five minutes from the town of St. Lucia. The area is
sandwiched between the Indian ocean on the East and Lake St. Lucia on the west, and has
the St. Lucia town border as its southern border. The northern border is the fresh water
lake, Lake Bhangazi.
The area has a rich history, and was once the home to a South African Air Force base
which was used by the flying boats called catalinas. These were used to search the ocean
for U boats during the second world war, and they did their share of sinking U boats with
three confirmed sinkings and a few damaged U boats that managed to escape.
